Past Movements in Education and Analysis of Curricuar Reforms Essay Example for Free
Past Movements in Education and Analysis of Curricuar Reforms Essay For an individual, it must be treated as a continuous process that should not end when graduation rites in each particular level of schooling are being held. True education is life, it must always be a part of our daily living, whether through formal or informal means. Educational systems in general, and educational curriculum in particular, also need not to be static. The curriculum should respond to the demands of a fast-changing society. To some extent, it should also be global or internationally-aligned. These are the reasons why foreign and local educational educators in the past and until now have been introducing educational reforms and innovations. They have been searching means to address the problems being met in the implementation of a certain curriculums and to ensure the total development of every learner. I. The Past Movements for Social Change in the School System Social change affects education. Centuries ago, pioneers of education have sought to introduce renewal in education. Their ideas were far ahead than the actual renewal that took place later on. Among them were Commenius, Condorcet, Rousseau, Pestalozzi, Froebel, Dewey, Drecoly, Montessori and Freinet. 1. Johann Amos Commenius -ââ¬Å"Father of Modern Educationâ⬠Most permanent educational influences: a. practical educational work Comenius was first a teacher and an organizer of schools, not only among his own people, but later in Sweden, and to a slight extent in Holland. In his Didactica Magna (Great Didactic), he outlined a system of schools that is the exact counterpart of the existing American system of kindergarten, elementary school, secondary school, college, and university. Didactica Magna is an educational treatise which aimed to seek and find a method of instruction by which teachers may teach less but learners may learn more, by which the school may be the scene of less noise, aversion, and useless labor, but of more leisure, enjoyment and solid progress; and through which the Christian community may have less darkness, perplexity (confusion) and dissension (disagreement), but on the other hand, more light, orderliness, peace and rest. b. formulating the general theory of education In this respect he is the forerunner of Rousseau, Pestalozzi, Froebel, etc. and is the first to formulate that idea of ââ¬Å"education according to natureâ⬠so influential during the latter part of the eighteenth and early part of the nineteenth century. c. the subject matter and method of education -exerted through a series of textbooks of an entirely new nature His published works: Janua Linguarum Reserata (The Gateway of Language Unlocked) contained his convictio n (certainty) that one of the prerequisites for effective educational reform was a fundamental change in language of instruction. Orbis Pictus (The World of Sensible Things Pictured) contributed to the development of the principles of audio-visual interaction. It was the first successful applications of illustrations to the work of teaching, but not the first illustrated book for children. Schola Ludus (School as Play) a detailed exposition of the doctrine that all learning should be made interesting, dramatic and stimulating. These texts were all based on the same fundamental ideas: (1) learning foreign languages through the vernacular; (2) obtaining ideas through objects rather than words; (3) starting with objects most familiar to the child to introduce him to both the new language and the more remote world of objects: (4) giving the child a comprehensive knowledge of his environment, physical and social, as well as instruction in religious, moral, and classical subjects; (5) making this acquisition of a compendium of knowledge a pleasure rather than a task; and (6) making instruction universal. He also developed the pansophic scheme, the view that education should take the whole of human knowledge as its universe. For him, truth was indivisible and was to be seen as a whole. Thus by relating each subject to every other subject and to general principles, pansophia was to make the learner capable of wisdom. 2. Marquis De Condorcet Marie-Jean-Antoine-Nicolas de Caritat took his title Marquis de Condorcet from the town of Condorcet in Dauphine. He advocated that the aims of education were: o cultivate in each generation the physical, intellectual and moral facilities and, thereby contribute to the general and gradual improvement of the human race. He envisioned a national system of public education designed to develop the natural talents of all, making real equality possible. His proposals of the five levels of public instructions areas follows: 1. Elementary- for the teaching of the ââ¬Ëelementsââ¬â¢ of all knowledge (reading, writing, arithmetic, morals, economics and n atural science)and would be compulsory for all four years 2. Secondary school- of three yearsââ¬â¢ duration, teaching grammar, history and geography, one foreign language, the mechanical arts, law and mathematics. The teaching at this and the first level would be non-specialized. 3. Institutes- responsible for ââ¬Ësubstituting reasoning for eloquence and books for speech, and for bringing philosophy and the physical science methodology into the moral sciencesââ¬â¢. The teaching at this level would be more specialized. Pupils would choose their own course of study (at least two courses a year) from among four classes: mathematics and physics, moral and political sciences, science as applied to the arts, and literature and fine arts. 4. Lycee the equivalent of universities, with the same classes as the institutes and ââ¬Ëwhere all the sciences are taught in full. It is there that scholars-teachers receive their further trainingââ¬â¢. Education at this and the first three levels was to be entirely free of charge. 5. National Society of Science and the Arts a research institute responsible for supervising the formal education system as a whole and for appointing teachers. Its role would be one of scientific and pedagogical research. 3. Jean Jacques Rousseau According to the history of education, he was the first great writer to insist that education should be based upon the nature of the child. Rousseauââ¬â¢s Emile is a kind of half treatise, half novel that tells the life story of a fictional man named Emile. In the history of education, the significant contributions of Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi are: 1) his educational philosophy and instructional method that encouraged harmonious intellectual, moral, and physical development Pestalozzis most systematic work, How Gertrude Teaches Her Children (1801) was a critique of conventional schooling and a prescription for educational reform. Rejecting corporal punishment, rote memorization, and bookishness, Pestalozzi envisioned schools that were homelike institutions where teachers actively engaged students in learning by sensory experiences. Such schools were to educate individuals who were well rounded intellectually, morally, and physically. Through engagement in activities, students were to learn useful vocations that complemented their other studies. 2) his methodology of empirical sensory learning, especially through object lessons Pestalozzi designed object lessons in which children, guided by teachers, examined the form (shape), number (quantity and weight) of objects, and named them after direct experience with them. 3) his use of activities, excursions, and nature studies that anticipated Progressive education. He also emphasized the importance of the nature of the child and propounded (advocated) that in the educational process, the child must be thought in relation to the subject matter. He sought to understand the nature of the child and to build his teaching around the natural, progressive and harmonious development of all the powers and capacities. He is an advocate of each manââ¬â¢s right to education and of societyââ¬â¢s duty to implement that right and pave the way to universal national education. His motto Learning by head, hand and heart is still a key principle in successful 21st-century schools. 5. Friedrich Froebel The German educator, Friedrich Froebel, was one of these pioneers of early childhood educational reform. Froebelââ¬â¢s educational principles: a) free self-activity As an educator, Froebel believed that stimulating voluntary self-activity in the young child was the necessary form of pre-school education (Watson, 1997a). Self-activity is defined as the development of qualities and skills that make it possible to take an invisible idea and make it a reality; self-activity involves formulating a purpose, planning out that purpose, and then acting on that plan until the purpose is realized (Corbett, 1998a). Corbett suggests that one of Froebels significant contributions to early childhood education was his theory of introducing play as a means of engaging children in self-activity for the purpose of externalizing their inner natures. ) creativity Froebel designed a series of instructional materials that he called gifts and occupations, which demonstrated certain relationships and led children in comparison, testing, and creative exploration activities (Watson, 1997b). A gift was an object provided for a child to play withsuch as a sphere, cube, or cylinderwhich helped the child to understand and internalize the concepts of shape, dimension, size, and their relationships (Staff, 1998). The occupations were items such as aints and clay which the children could use to make what they wished; through the occupations, children externalized the concepts existing within their creative minds (Staff, 1998). Therefore, through the childs own self-activity and creative imaginative play, the child would begin to understand both the inner and outer properties of things as he moves through the developmental stages of the educational process. c) social participation A third component of Froebels educational plan involved working closely with the family unit. Froebel believed that parents provided the first as well as the most consistent educational influence in a childs life. Since a childs first educational experiences occur within the family unit, he is already familiar with the home d) motor expression Motor expression, which refers to learning by doing as opposed to following rote instructions, is a very important aspect of Froebels educational principles. Froebel did not believe that the child should be placed into societys mold, but should be allowed to shape his own mold and grow at his own pace through the developmental stages of the educational process. 6. John Dewey He contributed the educational philosophy which maintains that education is life, education is growth and education is a continuous reconstruction of human experiences from the beginning to the end of life. He was the spokes person of progressive education which states that aims have significance only for persons, not for processes such as education, and arise only in response to problematic situations in ongoing activities. Aims are to be viewed as anticipated outcomes of transactions, as intrinsic aspects of the process of problem-solving, and as a motivating force behind the individualââ¬â¢s approach to problem-solving situations. The Progressive Education Association, inspired by Deweyââ¬â¢s ideas, later codified his doctrines as follows: a. The conduct of the pupils shall be governed by themselves, according to the social needs of the community. b. Interest shall be the motive for all work. c. Teachers will inspire a desire for knowledge, and will serve as guides in the investigations undertaken, rather than as task-masters. d. Scientific study of each pupilââ¬â¢s development, physical, mental, social and spiritual, is absolutely essential to the intelligent direction of his development. . Greater attention is paid to the childââ¬â¢s physical needs, with greater use of the out-of-doors. f. Cooperation between school and home will fill all needs of the childââ¬â¢s development such as music, dancing, play and other extra-curricular activities. g. All progressive schools will look upon their work as of the laboratory type, giving freely to the sum of educational knowledge the results of their experi ments in child culture. He believed that education has two sides: the psychological and the social on the same plane. Education must start from the psychological nature of the child as the basis for directing his energies into totally useful channels. Schools must be set up to include bond the individual and social goals. The needs of a new society are to be taken into consideration in modifying methods and curriculum. 7. Ovide Decroly He influenced instruction in the kindergarten, the aim of which was to guide the childââ¬â¢s desire for activity and to give him a sense of discipline and norms for his social behavior (same with Dewey) 8. Maria Montessori Maria Montessori left a long lasting mark on education around the world.

James 1:17- ââ¬Å"Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.â⬠How would a person feel if someone took his or her life? Unborn babies have no say in this decision. They cannot choose life or death. It is understand that the mother has a choice to abort her baby, but the child cannot do anything about his or her life being taken away. Eighteen days after conception the baby has a heartbeat. Taking his or her life would essentially be murder. Abortion is wrong and should be abruptly halted not only in the United States but, throughout the whole world for several reasons. One reason why women should not have an abortion is related to human values. Women need to think about their unborn babies who are the one that is not responsible for this situation. The unborn baby should have the privilege to live and grow a normal life, and grow into a normal person. When you think about it the baby does not know why he or she is here. It is not necessary to kill a life; there are multiple oth...

They meet the boss, the Janitor, the boss' son, Curley and his wife, Carlson and Slim (workers on the ranch). Curley takes a disliking to Lennie as he susses him out. Death Penalty Rewritten Essay
What does one learn about in a first year composition class in Appalachian State University? Afterà reading from Dr Kimberly Gunter it is still unclear to this writer. Quotes fromthe end of this paperà signified the two ends of the spectrum when it comes to the Death penalty; ââ¬Å"Fry ââ¬ËEm Allâ⬠and ââ¬Å"The Bleeding Heartâ⬠(Gunter, 38). This paper written by Dr. Kimberly Gunter from Appalachian State University initially appears on the surface to be about how the class she has been teaching for the last 15 weeks has looked to understand the death penalty in their state and why they oppose it. In the end Gunter describes how she used a topic that she obviously has strong opinions and emotionswith and has her students learn to write about it. The Title of this paper ââ¬Å"In Our Namesâ⬠: Rewriting the U.S. Death Penalty (32) suggests that maybe there were petitions put together for possible ratifications to the death penalty laws or at least a Billwritten and presented to the state legislators for consideration. There is nothing in the paper suggesting any of that was accomplished. Gunter takes the reader on a field trip with her class to a Maximum Security prison in North Carolina in a final research effort for a class project the students have been working on. Gunter uses analogies like the equating the air in the prison smelling like a ââ¬Å"day of hog-killingâ⬠(32) in an attempt to disgust the reader from the beginning with the idea of death row.Gunter continues to describe low life prison guards and overly medicated innocent prisoners. Throwing in one liner comments from students whose life experience equates to growing up in privileged middle class families and having the opportunity to attendan established University like Appalachian State University. Gunter provides partial statistics in an attempt to show the reader her knowledge on the subject of Capital Punishment. As tha paper comes to a conclusion Gunter was attempting to integrate her students into academic writers and focusing on a singular project tied together by the death penalty. In her writings Gunter shows a bias towards the death penalty invoking imagesà of dead pigs and fowl stenches in the readers mind. Gunter contradicts these images later in the paper when she describes thedeath chamber with a hospital gurney and crisp sheets on it. This is Gunterââ¬â¢s attempt at using a ââ¬Å"pathosâ⬠argument. Gunter wants to show the humanity side of the death penalty but fails in ways when she quotes a guard ââ¬Å"he out and out said rape isnââ¬â¢t much of a problem in that prison, but last year, another guard, a bg barrel-chested sergeant who kept saying ââ¬ËI like to fight,ââ¬â¢ told me that, while the guards ruled the prison during the day, the prisoners ruled at night, and that prisoner rape was widespread and unchecked while the cell blocks were on nightly lockdown.â⬠(35). This example of rape in prison only helps solidify some readers minds about capital punishment and the inability of offenders to be rehabilitated. The writer does not use any evidence to support her argument which is not even clearly defined or understood in the paper. The reader finishes reading the work and searches for the true topic of the work, is it about the death penalty, is it about a first year composition class or is it about a transformation of the student to open their minds or take on different perspectives in life? It is never truly defined within the body of the work. There is misinformation in the body of work. Gunter is quoted on page 34 â⬠We learn that there are no on-site educational programs..â⬠This is untrue according to the Educational Services for the Department of Prisons in North Carolina. It is difficult to identify if the writer of this work is successful in conveying her point to the reader. There is a use of pathos in the work that will pull on the emotions of the reader, but it is not clear what emotions are to be pulled on or the wrong emotions are enacted. If the purpose of the paper was to showthat young college aged students are able to open their minds or embrace academic writing it was not successfully portrayed or documented in any way. buy custom Legal Aspects of Information Systems Security essay
buy custom Legal Aspects of Information Systems Security essay Computer security threats are not limited to companies at all. Computer systems via network are vulnerable to many threats. The effect of various threats varies significantly; some affect the confidentiality or integrity of data while others affects availability. Business operation is disrupted by these threats and is exposed to the risk of significant losses if attacked. It is important to understand the types of threat that are encountered in online business and how they manifest themselves. Calder, (2006) says to stay safe online requires a combination of behavior and tools that are appropriate and proportionate to the cyber threat and computer-related risk (p. 2). According to Rauvid (2005), information security is a complex issue which deals with the confidentiality, integrity and availability of valuable data, sitting within business critical systems, and subject to world class threats (p. 5). Some of the biggest security online business face includes; Trojans, data loss, organ ized crime networks, virus, cyber espionage, phising, internet threats among others. Trojan which is also known as spyware often sits silently on company systems. They monitor users and their computer activities, and then steal sensitive data. They try to access information that no one would want to get out. That include collecting users personal information like; password, credit card number etc, then stored it in file, where it can easily be retrieved over the internet. Online business exposes one to this threat because people are mostly tempted to open online programs which seems to be legitimate but instead ends up compromising security and cause a lot of damage. In some cases, simply visiting a website can result in the automatic installation of unwanted software. This technique, known as drive-by downloading can lead to automatic acquisition of a spyware program without permission or notification (Botha, Bothma, Geldenhuys, 2008). Trojan opens a communication port and report back to computer through the internet. This intrusion by Trojan has grown so rapidly a nd now represents a critical threat to online business. Firms communicate to their customers or client via the internet. This is very essential for the business success but its fraught to security threats like data loss and its possible consequences. Data loss poses a major risk to individual as well as organization which mishandle entrusted data or information. Company should ensure that confidential and sensitive data is well protected. Photopoulos (2008) explains that in addition to customer, constituent, and employee information, sensitive data encompasses business and operational information whose disclosure would violate a legal agreement or deny organization a competitive advantage to its competitor (p. 4). There should be a proper strategy to bring down number of instances of data loss. Effective data security can be attained by combined effort from both the company and its employee. This evident as Photopoulos (2008) puts it that both organizations and individuals are acutely aware of the risk from the loss of sensitive informati on. Businesses heavily rely on data and information to make critical decision and therefore its security should be emphasized. nline business also faces threat of organized crime. It is primarily about pursuit of profit and is understood by continuation of business by criminal means. Internet and the continuing growth of online business offer enormous new opportunities. Sophisticated cyber networks such as Russian Business Network are responsible for creating and distributing much of the malware responsible to business losses. Parker (2004) gives example an of organized crime attack to online business as an attempt at electronically rerouting a package or delivery, manipulating financial networks, or altering the value of commodity such as electricity, to profit from the change (p. 225). To grip organized crime it is advisable to have strategic thinking about cyber-security in planning and implementing security measures. This is particularly important if online business is to reach its full potential and companies avoid significant losses. Computer viruses have increased substantially causing a big threat to online business. They spread from one computer to another when its host is taken to the target. Historically many businesses introduced policies requiring that employees do not software that has not been virus checked on their employers equipment (Brock Azim-khan, 2008). These policies were enforced to protect spreading of virus. But as Brock and Azim-khan (2008) continue to explain these days majority of viruses are introduced through the internet, via e-mail, accessing a website or within a document (p. 120). The anatomy of Internet allows computer viruses to spread extremely fast and much effectively infect millions of computers. They spread by following means; removable disk, e-mail attachments, or from downloads off the internet. It is more likely to contract a virus from the web than from any other packaged software. Due to this reason online business is more prone to viruses which are major challenge to suc cess. Computer viruses are dangerous to online business because of their ability to attack at many levels. Though virus protection cannot be hundred per cent effective there must proper measures minimize chances of attacks. This is due to the effects they have to online business; according to Brock and Azim-khan (2008) they are costly and waste business time. Business secretes are very critical and business cannot afford to lose them especially to competitors. Competitors will use this information for their advantage. in online business cyber espionage is threat to survival of business. Attackers attempts to get information of individuals, competitors, government, and rivals for personal, political, or economic advantage. Mostly this is done via internet or cracking techniques and use of malicious software. The motive cyber spying to gain access for secret information is for an ethical and illegal strategic advantage. While companies must act in their interest, potential damages resulting from cyber espionage deserves equal attention. Companies in online business have also been victim of phishing. Users are tricked into handing over control of their online accounts. This is done by spamming out authentic-looking emails that claim to come from well-known e-business institutions such as paypal, eBay etc. the methood used by spammers have become sophisticated and its now increasingly being used as a tool for online fraud or theft. Companies which transact online should take an important step of using an integrated gateway security to protect IT infrastructure. Internet threats have presented a state of dilemma to online business. The fact that internet itself is not a secure environment has been a challenge. This has made companies to find the means of protecting themselves from these threats. For example they use antivirus software to guard against virus threats. These antiviruses should be updated regularly in order to be effective. Also backing up data frequently and enlightening users of the system, ways of minimizing transmission of virus is encouraged. To deal with unauthorized, access most companies enforce authentication of user through use of password. Since password doesnt guarantee sufficient protection, companies have taken another step to enforce sure security by using more sophisticated authentication technologies. These include voice and handprint recognition, coded ID cards or eve retinal scanning system. In addition of putting security measures online business also requires ethics. World Wide Web is not a haven for good bu siness ethic because it is filled with unscrupulous characters that are eager to get rich. With a new revolution in business taking place, the following ethical issues; security, confidentiality, and privacy are important. Most companies in online business implement security system as part of the infrastructure that implements their process. Customer need to be assured of the security of online system they are dealing with. According to Singh and Waddell (2003), all business operate in a climate of insecurity, be that financial or otherwise and are increasing pressure report in accordance with environmental sustainability and social responsibility (p. 253). The issue of security is very critical for online business and it should be give attention it deserves. Confidentiality of information is vital for all companies. The big challenge of any online business is how to keep this ethics. When accessing information online employees may unknowingly disclose very crucial company information to competitor, rival or enemy. It is also tricky for online transactions to maintain confidentiality for both seller and the prospective buyer. Privacy has also been an issue to online business. Consumers or customer feels that their privacy is threatened when required to fill personal information online. An effort must be made to keep law of dealing with problems such as spam and privacy, and also investigate how it can be amended and harmonized globally to provide sanction and backing to self regulatory and technical solutions. In conclusion we can generally agree that business transactions have gone beyond simple information processing to redefined relationship between an organization and its clients, suppliers, partners and competitors. Technology has provided foundation to embrace aspect of producing, buying and selling product or services online. However there are potential security threats which must be analyzed in order to be successful in e-business. Buy custom Legal Aspects of Information Systems Security essay

Banking Union in Europe Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words
Banking Union in Europe - Essay Example The inspiration for a banking union was the delicacy of various banks in the Eurozone, and the distinguishing proof of endless loop between credit conditions for these banks and the sovereign credit of their individual home nations. In some countries the private debts that arose due property bubble were shifted to ascendant liability as an outcome of the banking systems bailout and government reactions to moderating economies post-bubble. It is due to the weakening of credit facilities at the time of the Eurozone crisis and fear of financial instability among the member states. This led to the need for interdependence between financial stability, banking policy and economic integration that saw the need to establish a banking union. Interestingly the banking sector of individual States faces the risk of likely marginalization as other countries in the union are trying to integrate Additionally, the banking union in Europe is immediately needed to revive the stability and credibility of the banks system within the Euro area. There has been a continuous vicious cycle of the sovereign countries in Europe and the banks themselves. For example, some countries are unwilling to participate in the activities of the Banking Union, for instance, the UK. The sabotage by the UK has made some countries too to wish to exit the Union because of numerous challenges. The Europeââ¬â¢s financial banking sector has been going through times of polarised tensions Starting 2014, the banking union primarily comprises of two primary activities, the Single Supervisory, and Resolution Mechanism, are based on the "single rulebook" ,or basic monetary administrative structure. The ââ¬Å"single rulebookâ⬠comprises of an arrangement of authoritative writings that every single money related foundation (counting more or less 8300 banks) in the EU must agree to. These principles,
